Neckarsaulm, Germany has been the site of vehicle manufacturing for over 100 years. From penny farthing bicycles to present day Audis, the plant has turned out millions of wheeled transports. In 1985, a very special 944 NA rolled down the assembly line and was imbuded with magical chassis characteristics in a great magnetic field generated by a sudden power surge.

Dorf Bergsteiger took delivery of the magic 1985.5 944 NA at Neckarsaulm with the intention of shipping it back to St. Louis for use as a Bergsteiger staff car. Dorf found the trip long, and the towing power of the open cockpit monoplane less than adequate for the trans-Atlantic flight. Poor weather forced an emergency landing at Mexico Farms, Maryland where this photograph was taken. Late for a meeting, Dorf flew on in the monoplane, leaving the car behind with a blank check to cover expenses on the car in perpetuity, and a German language service manual.
